Sonoma County, California
Once the site of a commercial nursery, only a grove of oak trees, an enormous magnolia, and a single-bedroom house remained when purchased by Bill and Linda Hawn as their eventual retirement home. The magnolia became the focus of two new cross-axes that organize and connect the new pavilions, including: a garage/ wine storage/ workshop; a kitchen/ dining/ living; and a master bedroom/ office pavilions. The original dwelling is embraced by the new structures, but remains defiantly off-axis relative to the new construction. The new landscape design elements and native plants integrate the buildings into the grove of oak trees and connect the site with the larger landscape of the river valley beyond.
