Seattle Architect Grace Kim, co-founder of Schemata Workshop, is one of 10 architects across the country receiving the American Institute of Architects 2008 AIA Young Architects Award. It honors professionals licensed 10 years or fewer who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession early in their careers. Awards will be presented at the AIA 2008 National Convention and Design Exposition in Boston in May.
Kim was recognized for her work in mentorship and internships. Her practice is a laboratory for practical lessons she wrote about in her book, “The Survival Guide to Architectural Internship and Career Development,” published in 2006 by John Wiley & Sons.
In addition to her committee work through the AIA, Kim has mentored a Chicago teen for the past 15 years. Throughout the past seven years, Kim also has presented at Expanding Your Horizons, a conference for junior high and high school girls to foster an interest for professions in math and science fields.
The last Seattle-area recipient of this AIA award was former City Councilmember Peter Steinbrueck. To learn more about Kim and the firm she founded with Mike Mariano, go to http://www.schemataworkshop.com/.
