North Carolina Residence

This mountain home sits on a wooded site. Its rational floor plan clearly designates zones of servant and served, which are layered from the most public to private. A load-bearing masonry structure, it deftly uses changes in materials to emphasize the organization of the house as well as to create a tectonic expression of wall and infill: the masonry walls have no openings and instead are treated as discrete planes allowing for the wood framed walls and windows to be place in the void between. By clearly delineating materials and there appropriate expression, one feels a subtle orientation both within the house and its relationship to the site.
